A mala is traditionally used in japa, the quiet repetition of a mantra or of the name of the deity. Each bead marks one recitation, so the mind can stay with the prayer instead of keeping count.

• Traditionally used in japa and in daily prayer.
• Many devotees keep one mala only for prayer, as a personal reminder of their practice.
• Often worn on temple visits, festival days and during vratams as a sign of devotion.
• A thoughtful gift for family members who keep a daily prayer routine.

• Hold the mala in the right hand and move one bead at a time towards you with the thumb, reciting the mantra or the name of the deity once for each bead.
• If the mala has a larger head bead (sumeru), begin next to it. When you reach it again, turn the mala around instead of crossing over it, as tradition advises.
• Keep the mala in a clean cloth pouch or a small box in the pooja room when it is not in use.
• Take it off before bathing, swimming or sleeping, and keep it away from perfume, soap and oil.
• Wipe the beads with a soft, dry cloth now and then. Do not soak the thread in water.
