An idol on the home altar gives the family a place to offer their daily prayers. Its gold-tone, rose-tone or painted finish is made to sit well in the pooja room or on a shelf.

• Kept in the pooja room and worshipped with flowers, a lamp and incense.
• Specially decorated and worshipped on the festival day of the deity.
• Kept at the entrance, on a desk or in a shop as a reminder of the deity.
• A traditional gift for house-warmings, weddings and new ventures.

• Place the idol on a clean, raised stand or peeta in the pooja room, not directly on the floor.
• Many families keep the idol facing east or west; follow your own family custom.
• Offer flowers, light a lamp and incense, and recite prayers as your family does.
• Do not pour water, milk or oil over gold-tone, rose-tone or painted idols, as this can mark the finish. Wipe them with a soft, dry cloth instead.
• Avoid polish, scrubbers and chemical cleaners, and keep the idol away from moisture.
