A Panchakavya lamp is a unique lamp crafted from five cow-derived materials: dung, milk, curd, gomyam, and ghee. Lighting this special lamp in your home is said to invite the presence of Mahalakshmi, bringing prosperity. The Panchakavya vilakku is said to dispel negative forces, creating a harmonious atmosphere. Additionally, the medicinal properties of cow dung contribute to the well-being of both the mind and body when its organic smoke is inhaled.

Lighting a lamp is one of the oldest parts of daily pooja in Indian homes. It is traditionally lit at dawn and at dusk in front of the deity, a reminder to begin and end the day with prayer.

• Traditionally lit every day in the pooja room, and on festival days such as Karthigai Deepam and Deepavali.
• Lamps made for a particular deity are traditionally lit on the days linked with that deity.
• The lit lamp is kept in front of the deity during pooja, aarti and japa.
• A traditional gift for weddings, house-warmings and festivals.

• Place the lamp on a flat, heat-safe plate or stand, away from curtains, paper and flowers.
• Use ghee, gingelly oil or lamp oil with cotton wicks. Fill to below the rim so the oil does not overflow.
• Light the lamp at dawn or at dusk in front of the deity, as is the custom in many homes.
• Never leave a lit lamp unattended, and keep it out of reach of children and pets.
• Once it has cooled, wipe away oil and soot with a soft cloth. Wash with mild soap or a little lemon juice, rinse and dry fully before storing.
